Unlike many other types of construction, we build dry stone walls based on the fact that gravity pulls straight down. If it pulled diagonally there would be a problem. Glues, bolts, wire, screws, cement, clamps and cables hold things together whether gravity pulls up, down, sideways or diagonally. Gravity is not a factor in how they hold things together, that is until these fastening devices fail and cease to work any more. Luckily for us wallers, gravity always pulls downward so that well built walls pretty much work all the time.
